Many people call each of the types of fiber arts as skills. This is an accurate term, but also confusing since each fiber art is also a collection of smaller skills. For example, to learn the macro skill of knitting, you learn the micro skills of casting on, forming a knit stitch, forming a purl stitch, maintaining tension, binding off, and more.

On Through the Yarny Curtain, we wanted to easily distinguish between the macro skills and the micro skills, and were struggling with the right terminology to adopt. Karen was watching one of those tv shows where a contractor rehabs a house that should be condemned, and the contractor referred to the different trades that needed to come in as 'disciplines' - plumber, electrician, etc. Karen loved this term for macro skills and immediately adopted it for Through the Yarny Curtain.
